Originally, the city of Centralia, Washington, was supposed to receive a copy of "The Spirit of the American Doughboy" for an American Legion memorial there, but the deal fell through, owing to the fact that an American Legion inspection committee found the statue was not a true cast bronze as expected, but made of hollow sheet bronze. Thus, the Legion canceled its commission, and another Doughboy sculpture, "The Sentinel", by Alonzo Victor Lewis, was placed at Centralia in 1924.
