John Paulding's "Over the Top to Victory", Model 2043-d
John Paulding's "Over the Top to Victory", Model 2043-D.
Identical to original model 2043-A except for the grenade in the right hand. |
E. M. Viquesney's "The Spirit of the American Doughboy".
Note the two tree stumps on base, and straight left knee in walking stance. |
This version of Paulding's "Over the Top" series is the only one which holds a grenade like Viquesney's statue (shown top right for comparison). Luckily, there are only two known to occur (at Buffalo, New York and Salem, Oregon), otherwise there would be considerably more confusion than already exists. But as with other Paulding "Over the Top" statues, the right leg is supported by a brace, with its foot clearing the base, features not present on Viquesney Doughboys. The two prominent tree stumps on the base of the Viquesney statue are a "hallmark" for that sculptor.
The D version bears the same title, "Over the Top to Victory" as the B version.
