John Paulding's "Over the Top", Model 2043-A
John Paulding's "Over the Top", Model 2043-A.
Note the closed proper right fist and the running stance with both knees bent. |
E. M. Viquesney's "The Spirit of the American Doughboy".
Note grenade in right hand, two tree stumps on base, and straight left knee in walking stance. |
This view of a Paulding Model 2043-A clearly shows the brace supporting the right leg, and right foot completely free of the base, a Paulding "hallmark" for this work. These features are common to all versions of the Model 2043 (A-D).
In contrast, all Viquesney Doughboys have both feet touching the base, with no additional support.
On most copies "J. Paulding, Sc." is signed on the base, with an American Art Bronze Foundry logo. Only one Model 2043-A, located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is known to have been cast by a different foundry, Flour City Ornamental Iron Company.
