John Paulding's "Over the Top to Victory", Model 2043-B
John Paulding's "Over the Top to Victory", Model 2043-B.
Identical to original model 2043-A except for the open right hand. |
E. M. Viquesney's "The Spirit of the American Doughboy".
Note grenade in right hand, two tree stumps on base, and straight left knee in walking stance. |
Note the single stump-like brace supporting the right leg, and the running, rather than walking stance. Viquesney Doughboys have two tree stumps on the metal versions, and no leg brace on any of them.
But even with all these clearly identifiable features, this model of Paulding's Doughboy was misidentified as "Spirit of American Doughboy" in a 2001 plaque put up in Leavenworth, Kansas.
In another instance, an identical statue at Missoula, Montana was constantly being "graced" with a fake hand grenade by a local resident, who thought the "original grenade" was "missing" from the right hand of this "Viquesney" statue. For years he had never looked at the signature on the base, and when informed, was amazed to find Paulding's mark.
The B version bears the same title, "Over the Top to Victory", as the D version.
On most copies "J. Paulding, Sc." is signed on the base, with an American Art Bronze Foundry logo.
