On mound at the top of a series of ten steps leading up to the four large plaques on the lawn of Carter County Courthouse on Main Street.
The left plaque inscription reads:
DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF
OUR COMRADES FROM CARTER COUNTY
WHO ENTERED THE SERVICE
OF THEIR COUNTRY,
THOSE WHO WERE WOUNDED AND
THOSE WHO GAVE UP THEIR LIVES
IN THE WORLD WAR OF 1917 – 1918

The dedication date doesn’t appear, but site visitor Glen Haney sent us an old article from the Sandy Valley Enquirer showing the dedication date was November 11, 1941.
Update September 30, 2020: There are plans underway to have the statue refurbished.
Update August 12, 2021: The statue, made of thin cast zinc parts, broke off at the ankles and collapsed. Carter County is looking into options for repairs.
Update January 19, 2022: The statue has been sent to McKay Lodge Conservation Laboratory in Oberlin, OH, for repairs. It may be moved to a new location in Grayson when returned.
Update May 4, 2022: Repairs to the statue are complete, but costs ran $600 over estimates. The statue will be picked up from McKay Lodge after the Carter County fiscal court approves the extra costs.
Update May 25, 2023: The statue is currently on its original base, pending removal to a new location.
