There are fourteen names of World War II casualties engraved on each side and five names of Vietnam casualties engraved on the back.
Dedicated May 4, 1923. The acquisition of the sculpture and monument were authorized by the Logan County Board of Commissioners in September 1921. The acquisition of the impressive base could explain why it was not dedicated until 1923, but that is merely speculation.

Earl's stepdaughter, Jana McCarver, in her version of the Doughboy pose at Oakley, Kansas. They were returning to Texas from Colorado and Jana detoured to Oakley so Earl could see their Doughboy.
