Smithsonian Art Inventory Control Number: 47260082.
On grounds of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1060, 469 Forry Street, just south of intersection with Daniel Avenue.
The Smithsonian record lists the address incorrectly as "460 Ferry Avenue".
The engraving on the stone at the Doughboy’s feet reads:
ERECTED BY NEWARK POST 1060 VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS OF U. S. DEDICATED TO THOSE COMRADES OF LICKING COUNTY WHO OFFERED THEIR LIVES IN HUMANITY’S DEFENSE WHERER [sic] THEIR CROSS MAY BE COMRADES IN THE SILENT LAND, IN DEATH WE SALUTE YOU DEDICATED JUNE 22, 1929
There is another plaque dedicated May 31, 1971 to honor all veterans who lost their lives in all wars.
The Doughboy was formerly in a park or square in downtown Newark, but now stands between two other memorial sculptures which appear to depict Civil War Army and Navy figures. Additionally, an eternal flame can be seen in the left foreground.
The Doughboy appears to be in very good condition, although both the bayonet and rifle butt are bent down. Note the figure and base are painted in two different colors.
The gas line and meter for the eternal flame are also visible in the photograph.
