2004 cast bronze replacement of original copyright version 1920.
Smithsonian Art Inventory Control Number: NO ENTRY.
In Childers Plaza, on the campus of Furman University.
The plaques that were with the Doughboy at its former location were also moved to Childers Plaza.
Two new plaques there read:
(on the low left brick column)
DOUGHBOY ARTIST: E. M. VIQUESNEY STATUE ORIGINALLY INSTALLED IN 1921 AT THE DOWNTOWN GRENVILLE MEN’S CAMPUS AND RECONSTRUCTED IN 2004 BY ARTIST MARIA KIRBY-SMITH. THE DOUGHBOY FACES EAST TOWARD THE BATTLEFIELDS OF FRANCE.
and on the low right brick column:
CHILDERS PLAZA PROVIDED BY ELAINE DUFFY CHILDERS ’43 WACO F. CHILDERS, JR. ’47 AND FRIENDS OF FURMAN UNIVERSITY
After Furman University's badly-damaged original Doughboy was retired to a museum, its old pedestal was moved to the newly created Childers Plaza area of the campus and a new cast bronze Doughboy was dedicated there in an impressive ceremony with attending dignitaries, ROTC, bagpipes, remarks, and rifle salute, on November 11, 2004.
In making the new casting, Maria J. Kirby-Smith (below) and her Camden, South Carolina studio associates studied the features of several existing Viquesney "Spirit of The American Doughboy" statues to create a copy that was faithful to the features of the original.
